Here is the question most people shopping for an Apple watch this autumn are really asking: is the new generation worth the jump over the cheaper model, or does an older watch at half the price do the job? With the new range now on sale in the UAE from AED 1,599, the answer is clearer than it has been in years.
This Apple Watch Series 12 review sticks to what changes your day: the new heart sensor, the new Readiness score, a battery that still lasts one day, and the feature you will not get in the UAE yet. If you are hunting for the best smartwatch for fitness and health in the UAE, we also set it against its siblings, the SE 3 and the Ultra 4, so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.
Design and materials: three finishes, not one
The Apple Watch Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm cases. The smaller one suits slimmer wrists and anyone who sleeps with the watch on. This year’s real change is the choice of materials: aluminium in dark bronze, black, light gold and space grey; titanium in radiant gold and natural; and a returning ceramic case in pearl white and night blue.
Aluminium models get Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60% tougher than the Ion-X glass on Series 11. In daily life that means fewer scratches from desks, car doors and gym racks, which is where most watch glass actually gets hurt. The ceramic version ships with a sport band and a dedicated closure, and it is clearly aimed at people who want a watch that looks right with a suit without giving up the fitness features.
The new heart sensor: what actually changed
Inside is the S11 chip and a new Health Sensing System with both an optical and an electrical heart sensor. The green LEDs are larger and more efficient, and heart rate is sampled every five seconds all day. That density matters: the spike from climbing stairs or a set of intervals shows up in your history instead of being averaged away.
Heart rate variability is sampled up to 24 times more often than before, and the watch now separates recovery HRV from overall HRV. The payoff is that your night is compared against your own baseline, not a generic range. ECG and blood oxygen are both available. What is not available in the UAE at launch is hypertension notifications; Apple says it is waiting on regulatory clearance and expects the feature next year. If blood pressure is the reason you are buying a watch, factor that in.
Readiness score: is it worth your attention?
The headline software addition is a daily Readiness score from 0 to 10, built from recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep, and translated into four verdicts that run from “Recover” to “Go For It”. It updates through the day, shows which factors are pulling it up or down, and comes with the watch at no subscription cost.
For someone who trains regularly it is genuinely useful, because it tells you when to push and when to back off. If your routine is a walk and two gym sessions a week, it will feel more like a nice number than a decision tool, and that is fine.
Battery and everyday use
Battery life is up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 10 hours of outdoor workouts, a 25% improvement. The more practical upgrade is fast charging: 15 minutes gives up to 12 hours, so a short top-up while you shower and get ready covers a working day. If you want multi-day endurance for a desert trek or an ultramarathon, that is Ultra 4 territory, with up to 50 hours.
A small safety feature worth knowing: Sound Recognition alerts you to sirens, alarms, doorbells and a crying baby, processed on the watch with no audio stored.
Comparison table: Series 12 vs SE 3 vs Ultra 4
| Feature | Apple Watch SE 3 | Apple Watch Series 12 | Apple Watch Ultra 4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAE price (from) | AED 999 | AED 1,599 | AED 3,199 |
| Case sizes | 40 and 44mm | 42 and 46mm | 49mm |
| Materials | Aluminium | Aluminium, titanium or ceramic | Titanium |
| Display | 1,000 nits | 2,000 nits | 3,000 nits, sapphire |

| Battery (normal use) | Up to 18 hours | Up to 24 hours | Up to 50 hours |
| ECG and blood oxygen | No | Yes | Yes |

The table in one line: SE 3 for the first-time buyer who wants notifications, activity tracking and Apple Pay for less, Ultra 4 for people who need ruggedness and a huge battery, and Series 12 as the balanced pick for most.
Price and value in the UAE
The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at AED 1,599 in the UAE according to Apple’s launch pricing, and it has been in stores since 18 September. The final price depends on size, material, band and GPS versus GPS plus Cellular, and Apple has not published detailed UAE pricing for titanium, ceramic or cellular models. Use the live price in the product card below rather than any number you find in an older article.
On value: if you already own a Series 11 or Ultra 3, upgrading now is not recommended, because the gains are incremental. If you are on a Series 9 or older, it is a large step up, especially in display, battery and charging speed. You will need an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27. If your phone is one of the models we compared in our iPhone 18 Pro vs Pro Max comparison, the pairing is seamless.
One buying note: the product card below links to the 42mm GPS version. The 46mm model has its own listing on Amazon.ae, so choose the size and band that fit your wrist before you check out.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Series 12 worth upgrading to from the Series 11?
Mostly no. The sensor and charging gains are real but small. The upgrade makes sense from a Series 9 or older.
How does the Series 12 compare with the SE 3, and is the extra money worth it?
You pay at least AED 600 more at the starting price for a display twice as bright (2,000 nits against 1,000), the full health sensing system with ECG and blood oxygen, and faster charging. If health and fitness are the point, it is worth it. If you only want notifications, buy the SE 3.
When should I pick the Ultra 4 instead?
If you hike, dive or run long distances, the 50-hour battery, tougher build and satellite messaging justify AED 3,199. Everyone else is well served by the Series 12.
Does it work with Android phones?
No. You need an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27.
Are hypertension alerts available in the UAE?
Not at launch. Apple says regulatory clearance is in progress and expects the feature next year.
What if I would rather not wear a watch?

Verdict
The Apple Watch Series 12 is the one we would recommend to most iPhone owners in the UAE: a more precise heart sensor, a useful Readiness score, quick charging and a wide range of materials, starting at AED 1,599. Skip it if you own a Series 11, need battery that lasts days, or are counting on blood-pressure alerts. For a budget wristband alternative see our Xiaomi Smart Band 9 Pro review.
