The real question with Apple’s first foldable is not whether folding is fun. It is whether the iPhone Duo is worth roughly AED 3,000 more than an iPhone 18 Pro Max in exchange for a bigger, bendable screen. The answer depends on how you use your phone, so here are the numbers.

This iPhone Duo review covers the 256GB Star White model, the version listed on Amazon.ae. UAE pre-orders opened on 16 October 2026 and sales started on 23 October. Our figures come from Apple’s official UAE specifications and reputable press coverage. We have not run our own lab tests, and where a number is Apple’s claim, we say so.

If you are still deciding between a foldable and a regular flagship, start with our iPhone 18 Pro vs Pro Max comparison to see what the same money buys in a slab phone.

Design and feel in the hand

The frame and hinge cover are titanium. Apple says the hinge cover is 3D-printed from recycled titanium and the hinge has more than 100 parts. The aim is a phone that survives being opened and closed dozens of times a day, but we have not tested long-term durability, and a verdict on the hinge needs months of real use rather than a launch-week impression.

The phone weighs 254 g according to Gulf News, which you will feel in a trouser pocket more than with a typical slab phone. It carries an IP68 rating, so splashes, dust and a spilled coffee on your desk are fine; just do not treat it as a phone for swimming, because warranties generally exclude liquid damage. It comes in Night Sky and Star White.

Security is Touch ID in the side button, and there is no Face ID. In practice the fingerprint works whether the phone is open or closed, which suits a folding body, but anyone used to Face ID will need time to adjust. The phone is also eSIM-only, with no physical SIM tray, and press coverage says e& and du both support it in the UAE. If you travel and swap local SIMs in every country, that is worth thinking about.

The two screens: small for the pocket, big for work

The outer display is 5.4 inches and the inner one is 7.6 inches, both Super Retina XDR with ProMotion and Always-On. Closed, it behaves like a compact phone you can answer messages on with one hand. Open, you get roughly the space of a small tablet for documents and video. The inner panel has a nano-texture layer that cuts glare, and Apple says it also makes the crease less visible. That is a manufacturer claim, so see it in a store before you buy, because how much a crease bothers you under your thumb is personal.

The practical gain is multitasking. iOS 27.1 lets you run two apps side by side in Split View on the inner screen, so you can read an email and check a calendar without switching. That is the whole argument for the format. Apple Pencil (USB-C) support has been announced but is not available at launch and is expected in a later 2026 update, so do not buy the phone today for handwriting.

Cameras

The rear system has two 48 MP cameras, a main and an ultra wide, with 0.5x, 1x and 2x options. There is no dedicated telephoto lens: the 2x view is a crop from the main sensor. That means zoomed shots at a concert or a match will look weaker than on a Pro phone. Video goes up to 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision.

For selfies and calls there is a 12 MP Center Stage camera on the outer screen and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inside. The nice trick is that you can shoot yourself with the strong rear cameras while previewing on the outer screen, which is one of the smartest uses of a folding design.

Performance, battery and charging

The A20 Pro has a 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and hardware ray tracing, the same class of chip you expect in Apple’s top phones. Running two apps side by side will not slow it down. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 come from Apple’s N1 chip.

There are two batteries, one in each half. Apple quotes up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and up to 31 hours on the inner one. These are lab figures from Apple, so expect less in real use, especially with the big screen at high brightness. Wired fast charging reaches 50 percent in about 20 minutes, and MagSafe or Qi2 charging reaches 50 percent in about 30 minutes, according to Apple.

Price and value in the UAE

Apple UAE prices, including VAT, start at AED 8,499 for 256GB, then AED 9,349 for 512GB, AED 11,049 for 1TB and AED 13,599 for 2TB. Amazon.ae lists the 256GB Star White model, but when we wrote this its product data returned no live price, so check the current price on the page and compare it with Apple’s. Press coverage lists the Duo Case at AED 319 and the Folio with Kickstand at AED 529, so include one in your budget.

The value here is in how you use it, not in the spec sheet. If you read and work on your phone a lot and want a bigger canvas in a small bag, the premium is justified. If you care mostly about camera and price, slab phones are the better deal.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone Duo worth the extra money over the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

If you will really use the big inner screen for reading, email and side-by-side apps, yes: the gap of about AED 3,000 buys a format a slab phone cannot offer. If you mainly take photos and message, save the money and buy the Pro Max.

How does the Duo’s camera compare with the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

Both 48 MP rear cameras are strong for wide and standard shots, but the missing telephoto makes distant subjects look weaker. Our comparison covers the Pro Max camera in detail.

Can you see the crease?

Apple says the nano-texture layer reduces how visible it is, not that it disappears. Try the phone in a store, because how much you feel it under your thumb is personal.

Does it use a physical SIM?

No. It is eSIM-only, and press coverage says e& and du support it in the UAE. Ask your operator to activate the line before you move your number.

Does it work with Apple Pencil?

Support for Apple Pencil (USB-C) is announced but not available at launch, and is expected in a later 2026 update. Do not buy it today for handwriting.

Which storage size should I pick?

256GB is enough for most people who use iCloud. Consider 512GB if you shoot a lot of 4K video at 120 fps.

The verdict

We recommend this phone to people who want a large screen that fits in a pocket and do not mind paying a premium, carrying extra weight and giving up a telephoto lens. Anyone who wants the best camera for the money should look at slab phones. The short version of this iPhone Duo review: a convincing first-generation idea, but neither the cheapest nor the best camera phone, so read the iPhone 18 Pro vs Pro Max comparison before you decide.
