The real question behind every smart litter box purchase isn’t “does it work?” but “is it worth a few hundred dirhams more than a scoop and a bag?” The answer depends on your cat and on your flat, so here are the numbers instead of marketing promises.

This review covers the PETKIT Purobot Max 3, the newest rotating-drum litter box from the brand. PETKIT announced it in July 2026 as the successor to the PuraMax 2, and it is on Amazon.ae today. Its headline change is an entry that PETKIT says is 43% larger, which targets the most common complaint from owners of big and older cats. We built this review from PETKIT’s published specs, the Amazon.ae listing and the user manual. We did not run our own lab measurements, and where a figure is the company’s claim we say so.

Design and build: big body, friendly doorway

The unit measures 62 × 53.8 × 55.2 cm and weighs 10 kg. In practice that is roughly half a square metre of floor, heavy enough to stay put when a cat jumps in, and too bulky to shuffle between rooms. Pick its permanent spot before you buy. PETKIT also warns against placing it on a rug or mat because that can interfere with the sensors, so the bare tile floors common in UAE apartments are actually a good fit.

The shell is PP and ABS plastic with TPE and silicone parts. No metal, no glass: it keeps the weight sensible and wipes clean with a damp cloth, but it won’t feel like premium kit. PETKIT’s own page doesn’t list colours, and product photos show a light finish, so check the Amazon listing before ordering.

The entry is the point. It is about 26.7 cm wide with an entrance height of 20.4 cm, and PETKIT says it is 43% larger than the PuraMax 2’s. For a heavy, elderly or short-legged cat, or one with stiff joints, that means stepping in rather than hopping through a tight opening. The box is rated for cats of 1.5–10 kg and at least six months old. Some large breeds such as Maine Coons can pass 10 kg, so weigh your cat first.

Four buttons sit on top: instant clean, deodorise, level litter and Wi-Fi pairing. That’s handy when you want to trigger a cycle without opening the app.

Safety and sensors: what happens when your cat walks in

Safety is what makes most owners hesitate. The Max 3 uses a drum with incomplete gearing, so it never completes a full rotation and the opening is always open, plus a side-by-side drum and waste bin design with no overlapping gaps where a paw or tail could be trapped. The Amazon listing describes 7 hall sensors, 4 weight sensors and 1 proximity sensor, which PETKIT counts as 12 sensors, and the drum stops when a cat approaches or enters mid-cycle.

These are manufacturer claims, not independent tests. The sensible advice doesn’t depend on any sensor: let your cat investigate the box while it is switched off, and keep an eye on the first few days, especially with a nervous cat.

Odour and daily cleaning: what matters in a UAE summer

When windows stay shut and the AC runs for months, litter smells concentrate faster in a flat than in an open house. PETKIT’s answer is the multi-stage OdorVoid system: an automatic clean after every visit, a waste-covering step after the cat leaves, a semi-enclosed drum, a sealed 7-litre side bin and the bundled N50 2.0 odour eliminator, which the company says neutralises up to 98% of ammonia. That figure is PETKIT’s claim, but the principle is sound: sealing waste away from room air works better than masking it later.

The bin holds up to 15 days of waste for a single cat, according to PETKIT, and the box includes 18 bin bags. With two or three cats the interval shrinks proportionally, so don’t treat 15 days as a rule. It is useful for a short weekend trip, but it is not a substitute for someone checking on the cat if you are away for a week.

It works with clumping litters such as clay, tofu, corn and bentonite, and includes two magnetic sifters, one for coarse litter and one for fine. Non-clumping litters like crystals or pellets don’t suit the sifting mechanism. The base mat is a third-generation anti-stick surface, and the ShieldBase gives a 360° seal that PETKIT says stops urine near the mat edge from leaking underneath.

On noise, the product page claims 35 dB while its own FAQ says 45 dB. Either is quiet for a machine of this kind, but listen to it yourself if the box will sit near a bedroom.

App and tracking: data you can’t see by eye

The Max 3 connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. If your router is dual-band, pair your phone to the 2.4 GHz network during setup. In the app you choose the clean mode (auto, timer or empty), turn on kitten protection and waste covering, and see each cat’s visits, duration and weight. Cats are recognised by weight, not by a camera, so two cats of similar weight may be hard to separate.

The value of those numbers is that a sudden change in visit frequency or weight can be the first thing worth raising with your vet. The box diagnoses nothing, but it shows what you would never notice by eye. There is no camera in this model. If you want video, the Purobot Max Pro 2 adds an AI camera for more money, or you can add a separate pet camera.

In short: the Max 3 is the newest and cheapest of the three right now, but it also has the thinnest review history. Table prices come from Amazon.ae at the time of writing and can change.

Price and value in the UAE

The Purobot Max 3 was listed at AED 2,300 on Amazon.ae when we published, and the listing mentions two years of after-sales coverage. Over three years that is roughly AED 2 a day. That is less than most people spend on air fresheners and failed odour fixes in a small flat, but compared with a plain litter box it still costs about two thousand dirhams more, so it won’t save you money. Buy it for the time, the smell control and your cat’s comfort, not for savings.

Consumables are extra: bin bags and odour eliminator are sold separately on Amazon.ae for tens of dirhams per pack, so the running cost stays far below the price of the box, but isn’t zero. Also note the 3.8-star rating from 42 buyers. That is a small sample for a new product, and we can’t tell what drove the lower scores, so read the latest reviews yourself before paying. The Amazon listing also says the bundled adapter is US-style, so confirm the plug type or get a suitable UAE adapter.

FAQ

Is the Purobot Max 3 worth it over a regular litter box?

If your cat is large or elderly, or you work long hours and dislike litter smell in a closed flat, yes: you pay for daily comfort. If your cat is small and you don’t mind scooping, a normal box with a good scoop is enough and saves about two thousand dirhams.

How does the Max 3 differ from the PuraMax 2?

PETKIT cites a 43% larger entry, a multi-stage odour system and a third-generation anti-stick mat. On Amazon.ae it is slightly cheaper right now, but the PuraMax 2 has far more reviews behind it.

Can two cats share it?

Yes, the app tracks each cat by weight. But the bin fills faster, and cats of similar weight may blur together in the data. Check the 10 kg limit for each cat.

What litter does it need?

Clumping litter: clay, tofu, corn or bentonite. Non-clumping crystals or pellets don’t suit it. For very fine litter use the fine-grain sifter that comes with it.

Is the Max 3 better than the Purobot Max Pro 2 for me?

Only if you don’t need a camera. The Max Pro 2 costs about AED 280 more at publish time and adds an AI camera. If you want to watch your cat’s bathroom habits on video, choose it; if weight and visit counts are enough, save the difference.

Is it safe if my cat walks in mid-cycle?

PETKIT says the drum stops when a cat enters or approaches and that the opening is always open. Let your cat get used to it switched off first, and watch the first days.

Verdict

The Purobot Max 3 suits owners of a big, older or more than one cat who want less smell and less daily scooping without paying for a camera they won’t use. If you want video, go for the Max Pro 2, and if you prefer a model with thousands of reviews, the PuraMax 2 is the safer pick. For most UAE homes with a cat like that, a smart litter box such as this one is a sensible buy, as long as you read the latest ratings and check the live price before buying.
